The most powerful passports belong to citizens of countries in Asia and Europe, with New Zealand and the United States being the exception. The U.S. technically ranks 17th with visa-free access to 187 countries, on par with Norway, New Zealand, and Switzerland. Ukraine’s passport has seen a drastic improvement over the last decade, currently providing visa-free access to 144 countries. It remains to be seen how this will change in the wake of the Russia/Ukraine conflict.
Passports from war-torn and politically unstable nations are often flagged as requiring visas for travel to counter illicit activity. North Korea is an immediate standout among the least powerful passports, with visa-free access to only 40 countries. Most North Koreans who travel abroad do so only for work, study, or athletic competitions, and leisure travel out of North Korea is virtually nonexistent.
Over the last 10 years, citizens of the UAE have seen their prospects for visa-free travel improve by over 100 countries, while other countries, like Yemen and Syria, have lost visa-free access to nine countries over the same period.
